Naat recited first time in Punjab Assembly

Staff Reporter

LAHORE: For the first time in the history of the Punjab Assembly, the speaker had to allow recitation of Naat (praise of Prophet Muhammad PBUH) in the house on the demand of elected legislators on Saturday. PPP MPA Tahir Mahmood Handali was the man who just after the recitation of verses from the holy Quran, on a point of order, demanded the recitation of Naat. Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal said the rules did not allow him to do so. However, the house resounded with the slogans in support of the demand of Tahir Mahmood and some members also started chanting slogans to pay homage to the prophet (PBUH). They also raised slogans like "Ghulami-e-Rasool Mein, Maut Bhi Kabool Hai' (Death is also acceptable while following the prophet's teachings). On seeing the situation, the speaker allowed the recitation of Naat on which MPA Amjad Mayo recited Naat. Later, the house congratulated Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal for allowing recitation of Naat, adding it was really very important and after the recitation of the holy verses, reciting Naat should be declared compulsory.
