Children Learn What They Live

Children Learn What They Live

By Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph.D.

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

A Dangerous Belief - Apr 23, 2010

By STEPHEN PROTHERO

"Some people are convinced that the only foundation on which inter-religious civility can be constructed is the dogma that all religions are one. I am not one of them. In our most intimate human relationships, who is so naive as to imagine that partners or spouses must be essentially the same? What is required in any healthy relationship is knowing who the other person really is. Denying differences is a recipe for disaster. What works is understanding the differences and then coming to accept and, when appropriate, to respect them. After all, it is not possible to agree to disagree until you see just what the disagreements might be. And tolerance is an empty virtue until we actually understand whatever it is we are supposed to be tolerating"....

Why did nobody help, asks mugged man, 79 - thestar.com

Police are asking bystanders to come forward after a subway car full of passengers ignored the cries of a 79-year-old man who was being mugged.

The robbery occurred around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, when the victim, Yusuf Hizel, was on an eastbound train along the Bloor-Danforth line.

According to Hizel, the confrontation began after a man, who was seated beside him, asked for change. Hizel refused, but was then approached by another suspect who asked the same question. When Hizel refused again, he got up to reach for the passenger-assistance alarm — the yellow strip located above the seats on all trains — and was then attacked. .......

In Islam, Every Day is Earth Day

In Islam, Every Day is Earth Day
by Fatima Ashraf
4/22/10
Earth Day was established in 1970 to raise awareness about the environment. Islam however, did more than that; it provided clear directives for action, as early as the seventh century. The Quran is filled with ayats and the Sunnah is filled with actions, on how to be stewards of the Earth.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “the Earth is a Mosque.” You can pray anywhere. The entire planet is meant to be a place for worship of its Creator. You can kneel down in awe and gratitude of Allah on grass, on sand, on a mountain, in a cornfield. Therefore, the planet and its people deserve to be protected.

To demonstrate the connection between Islam and the environment, let’s talk about waste, water, watts, and food. These four topics are especially important because civilizations have been built and destroyed on their ability or inability to manage them. Think about it - a society that cannot remove its trash, preserve its water, create energy, and distribute food - will not flourish. As Muslim-Americans who live in this country, we create waste, drink water, use energy, and eat food. We need to start thinking responsibly about our actions and how they impact the environment. Knowing what our Deen says about being Green is the perfect place to start.

America leads the world in waste production. We are less than 5% of the world’s population and create over 25% of the entire world’s waste. .....Read the rest of the article at elan

The Shepherd’s Granddaughter

The Shepherd’s Granddaughter

Remove novel on Mideast conflict from elementary schools, trustees say - Parentcentral.ca

Here is the beginning of my post. And here is the rest of it.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Plans to remove "To Kill a Mockingbird" from the school curriculum in Ontario.

Reasons:
- Some parents complained about the language in the book.
- Some suggested that books being used about African American people should be written by black people.

I don't think it should be removed. Its a great book.

Suggestions for replacements.
- "The book of negroes" by Lawrence Hill
- "Child of Dandelions" by Shehnaz Nanji
- "The Bite of the Mango" by Mariatu Kamara

No-interest MasterCard aims at devout Muslims - thestar.com

Emily MathieuBusiness Reporter
Zero interest and faith are not words one commonly associates with credit cards.
They do have a place in discussions about the iFreedom Plus MasterCard, tailored to meet the religious requirements of Canada’s Islamic community and recently launched by Toronto company UM Financial.
“There are clients in the market looking for structured products that are compliant,” from credit cards to mortgages, said Omar Kalair, president and chief executive officer. UM Financial plans to market the card to all Canadians.
